Industrial Design

Also known as: Product Design, Design Engineering, User Experience Design, Product Development

Industrial Design is an innovative field that focuses on the creation and improvement of products and systems, emphasizing functionality, aesthetics, and user experience. This program teaches students how to combine art and technology to design consumer products, from furniture to electronics. Students learn about materials, manufacturing processes, human factors, and design principles. Hands-on projects, collaborative teamwork, and portfolio development are crucial components of the curriculum. Through design thinking methodologies, students explore real-world problems and develop solutions that are both user-centered and environmentally sustainable. The program often includes opportunities for internships, allowing students to gain practical experience in the industry while working with established designers and companies.

A Week as a Student

You start your week with a "History of Design" lecture, tracing movements from Bauhaus to contemporary minimalism. Notes fill your sketchbook margins, sparking ideas. Afterwards, it’s straight to the studio for "Design Thinking I." Your current project: redesign a common kitchen utensil. You’re brainstorming concepts, trying to make your sketches articulate your vision clearly, but the perspective on one drawing isn't quite right. A TA stops by, offering a quick tip on vanishing points. Later, you grab lunch, reviewing your initial ideas for group discussion later in the week.
