Lay out reference points and dimensions on metal or plastic stock or workpieces, such as sheets, plates, tubes, structural shapes, castings, or machine parts, for further processing. Includes shipfitters.

AI and automation will increasingly assist layout workers, using advanced CAD/CAM software and robotics for precise marking and cutting. This may reduce the need for manual layout in mass production, shifting the role towards overseeing automated systems, programming, and handling more complex or custom projects. Workers will need to adapt to new digital tools and potentially maintenance of automated equipment.
